Changes to Renovation Guidelines here in BC

Today at my Monday morning meeting I learned something new that will have financial ramifications for people here in BC.

It was announced that their have been new and far more stringent guidelines and rules brought into play about the issue of removing drywall and stipple ceilings in buildings built before 1980. The issue is to do with the asbestos content, how it now has to be disposed of and how much more it is going to cost everyone.

The WCB (workers compensation board) have targeted this area with renewed vigour raising the bar on how much more strict they will be about the removal and disturbance of these materials. You will definitely need a permit and there will have to be a much more rigorous assessment made before any work begins. It has already raised the cost of that practically overnight from around $500 to $3200. The way in which these materials have to be removed requires much more high tech structural equipment to be installed at the renovation site that will add thousands to the project (with domes and tubes your home will look like the set from E.T.) All materials are now to be specially transported to Alberta for "processing"

If you don't comply you stand a great chance of receiving hefty fines. So for all of you would be renovation junkies out there, be aware and factor it into your overall costs as it will make a significant difference!
